The Government of Grenada would like to congratulate the National Football Team for advancing to the final of the DIGICEL Caribbean Cup being held in Jamaica.

Grenada National Football (Soccer) TeamGrenada defeated Cuba 6-5 on penalty kicks after both teams played to a 2-2 draw at the end of full time, and also secured a berth in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2009.

This achievement is significant since many critics did not consider Grenada as a possible contender for the final with the likes of Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Cuba.

Sports Minister Patrick Simmons said that the performance of the team again demonstrated the talent of our national sportsmen and women and it’s now up to the authorities to provide the necessary support and infrastructure to assist in the development of the various sporting disciplines.

He said that the government will like to join the football community, and Grenadians on a whole, in congratulating the national team, and also encouraging the players to give out their best effort in the final on Sunday.

Mr. Simmons said that the Government will consider providing assistance to our national players – something that will be discussed with the Football Association in the very near future.
