A top female activist of the main opposition, New National Party (NNP), Nikoyan Roberts has landed a job with a statutory body under the watch of Tourism Minister, Glynis Roberts. Informed sources told THE NEW TODAY newspaper that Roberts, the wife of former opposition Senator Kennedy Roberts, has taken up duties with the Grenada Board of Tourism (GBT) with effect from the middle of this month.

According to a well-placed source, Nikoyan Roberts was selected to fill the vacant position of Head of Product Development and Customer Services, following the unfortunate death last September of Asquith Duncan. Roberts who campaigned with the NNP in the 2008 general election is also a leading activist with its Women’s arm. The source who asked not to be named said that the Board of Directors decided to give the NNP activist the job on the grounds that she was the most successful application following advertisements placed in the local media.

“What I know is that she (Mrs. Roberts) came out on top and the board decided to give her a contract”, he added. The source could not shed any light on whether any instructions were given by GBT management for the new recruit not to engage in frontline politics while in its employ. Roberts is no stranger to GBT having workers with the statutory body a few years ago.

Her last assignment was with SOL EC LTD, the Grand Mal-based oil company. She reported left the job as Island Manager to join the campaign of the then governing NNP to help it try and remain in power in the July 2008 general election which it eventually lost to the now governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of Prime Minister Tillman Thomas.

Roberts’ name has also been linked with the NNP as a possible candidate in the next general elections for the Town of St. George Constituency now held by Foreign Affairs Minister, Peter David. The appointment of Roberts at GBT has reportedly angered many in the country in light of the ruling party’s failure in two years to provide adequate jobs for its own supporters.
