PRIME MINISTER TO DISCUSS A ROADMAP FOR OECS ECONOMIC UNION AT MEETING IN ANGUILLA

ST.GEORGE’S, GRENADA, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18th, 2009_ Prime Minister Tillman Thomas will give his government’s position on the deepening of the integration process and the establishment of the OECS economic union when he meets with his colleague heads of government at the 50th meeting of the OECS Authority in Anguilla over the next two days.

The meeting at the Cuisin Art Resort and Spa in the Valley, will also discuss approaches to governance and the setting up of structures that will aid the smooth functioning of the Economic Union. The launch of Infofacts - a publication of “facts at your fingertips”, designed to provide information about the various islands, is also on the agenda.

Prime Minister Thomas, who is also Chairman of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) will discuss with his OECS counterparts, the sub-region’s preparation for and position on the Copenhagen Summit on Climate Change in December.

“The survival of this region is dependent on our resolve to work together, whether it’s the response to the financial crisis, which is also on our agenda or climate change which has serious implications for us and our development as small states,” the Prime Minister said.

He said Grenada is committed to playing its role in the development of a single economic union within the OECS, given the will and commitment among countries, at this time, to forge ahead with the process.

The meeting will also be updated on the OECS stabilization programme in the face of the global economic downturn.

Prime Minister Thomas, who is accompanied by Foreign Service Officer, Cyrilla Steele, will return to Grenada on Saturday.

Finance Minister Hon. Nazim Burke is acting Prime Minister.
