GRENADA TODAY - Week ending Sept 19th, 2009
The state-run Gravel, Concrete and Emulsion Production Corporation is once again under the microscope. There is some uneasiness over the manner in which the daughter of a government minister landed the job of Human Resource manager.
The issue involves, Shanica Gilbert- daughter of Public Utilities & Works Minister, Joseph Gilbert - who recently took up duties at the corporation and is said to be nearing the end of her three-month probation period. GRENADA TODAY spoke with Acting Manager of Gravel & Concrete, Ion Mars who indicated that Gilbert was recruited and placed to understudy long-standing employee, Madge Mc Guire who ended her more than 26 years of service with the Corporation last week Friday.
He described the minister’s daughter as one who brings a vast level of expertise to the state-run body, as well as having acquired a wealth of knowledge working with Global Generation, a charitable company in London shortly after completing her Master’s degree in International Marketing Communications.
Ms Gilbert told GRENADA TODAY that since her return from London in January, she had applied to several companies in Grenada and throughout the region seeking employment. She identified Gravel & Concrete as one of those but she did not get a response for a long time. She said when Mc Guire submitted her resignation, she was then called in for an interview.
Ms. Gilbert made it abundantly clear that her father was not aware of her application to the company and he was only informed about it after she did the job interview. When asked if Gravel & Concrete had received any complaint about Gilbert’s employment, the Acting Manager said that he had not received one single complaint from anyone questioning the employment of the minister’s daughter.
