Police are investigating the circumstances that lead to the shooting death of Frik Potgieter of Fontenoy, St. George’s.
The South African-born man who manufactures wine from his home was discovered dead on Tuesday night in his yard with a gunshot wound in the area of the face by some neighbours.
One of the neighbours told The New Today Newspaper that he and family members were looking at the nightly television newscast when they heard a loud explosion and upon investigation discovered Potgieter lying in the yard.
The neighbours also saw one of the elderly man’s sons, Shaun outside in the yard with a wound on his arm. He later fainted and fell to the ground.
Police Investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in St. George’s who were called out to the scene carried Shaun who was in an unconscious state to the St. George’s General Hospital to seek medical attention.
Details are still sketchy about what could have lead to the double incident at Fontenoy.
There are unconfirmed reports that the older Potgieter resorted to committing suicide after learning of his other son’s death overseas.
Just about three years ago, the other son, Erik went off to join the British Army.
Head of the Community Relations Department of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF), Superintendent Dunbar Belfon who visited the scene of the incident told this newspaper the police are looking at all angles in order to determine what may have lead to the double incidents.
Supt. Belfon confirmed that a gun was found close to Potgieter’s body and would serve to enhance the police investigation.
A female doctor was summoned to pronounce the man dead before the body was taken away by a funeral agency.
Meanwhile, police are in mourning following the death of one of their members in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Inspector Anslem Joseph died after suffering from a stroke.
A former member of the Police Prosecution Department, Insp. Joseph was receiving assistance from government to pursue legal studies at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Barbados.
