EDITORIAL
Three deaths by unlawful means within a two-week period in Grenada are just too much. Two of the killings have been classified as murder while the one involving five police officers have been deemed to be manslaughter by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The fact of the matter is that all three deaths were unnecessary and should not have happened at all. THE NEW TODAY is not at this stage getting carried away to make a public declaration that there is a crisis on hand in terms of criminal activities. This is very far from the truth.
Our hope is that the next few weeks and months will see no more murders and a general stabilization in vicious and brutal crimes as has become the norm in this country. If there is a consistent rise in the murder rate in the coming weeks and months then Grenadians should begin to sit up and take serious note.
This newspaper is very mindful of the spike in murders leading up to the last general elections when a record number of persons were killed in very strange circumstances. Several persons in our midst speculated this unfortunate increase in murders were being caused by persons with dirty and filthy hands who were engaged in devil worshipping and believed that sacrifices of human souls and bodies were needed in order to get a particular result in the national poll.
Grenadians were pointing their fingers in a particular direction for the cause of these senseless killings as never seen before in the Isle of Spice. General elections are 18 months away and one can expect the political parties to start at this very moment to get real active and prepare their machinery for the poll.
Politicians are viewed in some quarters as too greedy for power and will do any and everything for power including "sleeping with the devil". Our calypsonians have sung several songs in recent times about political leaders who pay visits to "Mother This" and Mother That" for blood baths in order to help them to get into power.
One of our political parties even had a questionable religious leader on its platform often opening its meeting with prayers. That religious leader was widely regarded as the so-called "Spiritual Healer and Advisor" of the leader of that party. In the end, the religious leader was only fooling himself and not God since he was eventually convicted in our law courts of a most heinous crime of passion against a 16-year old troubled schoolgirl.
And the recent incident involving a 15-year old from one of the island's better-known secondary schools has raised certain suspicions in the country. There are allegations that "the devil" was at work in this episode. Several reports have reached us concerning the amount of young persons in this country who are using the Internet to experiment with sites that are widely regarded as being under the control of evil and demonic powers.
The unfortunate thing is that some parents are not computer-savvy enough to understand what is happening in their own homes since they lack understanding of the use of these modern day gadgets. However, parents need to know and take charge of what is happening inside their own homes whether in their children's bedroom or the sitting room when the kids are surfing the Internet.
We grew up knowing that charity begins at home. The parents have to take responsibility for the actions and behaviours of their kids and not leave everything up to the school system. This newspaper has received reports about a number of questionable sites that are frequented by young people in this country that are deemed to be undesirable. As a nation, we need to take a collective resolve to put an end to it even if it means getting the Internet providers to block out some of the questionable sites.
Every patriotic Grenadian should be concerned about developments in their country. We need to monitor the crime situation closely in order to ensure that nothing sinister is done as part of man's greed and desire to fulfill his personal ambitions. The right hand of the Lord is needed each and every day to pass over this land in order to ensure that all wickedness and nastiness whether in high or low places are driven out of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
As people who like to pray, we have to continue to look to the Good Lord for our salvation and not man.
