A local milk distributor is promoting a health drink specifically for the nation's children under the theme, "Drink the milk, share the love".

Hubbard's, the local distributor for Dutch Lady milk, is promoting the importance of milk in the development of children under the age of 18.

The company last week Friday officially launched its Dutch Lady milk promotion at its Lagoon Road outlet.

Managing Director, Jonas Brown & Hubbard (G'da) Ltd, Allan Bierzynski, said "we believe that so much emphasis is placed on the market today on beverages for those 18 and over, that the time is right for us to concentrate on the people who are not yet 18 and provide the means for them to develop healthy, wholesome dietary habits."

The promotion includes an essay competition and Bierzynski said his company is not only seeking to promote the writing and communication skills of the students but to reinforce awareness of the wholesomeness of milk as part of any diet.

He expressed confidence that the relationship which Hubbards is seeking to develop between its participating supermarkets and shops will be strengthened because of the range of products, as well as the type of packaging and nutritional value of the product which they are marketing at this time.

"Dutch Lady has a good reputation and we expect that we can only build upon it," Bierzynski said.

Representative for the Ministry of Education, Pamela Courtney welcomed the initiative saying that the ministry sees this as an opportunity for corporate citizens to give back to the society, which helps to sustain them.

She felt it was a very good initiative for many reasons such as helping to improve the essay writing skills of students, the development of an awareness of the nutritional value of milk and the importance of milk in diet to promote and enhance proper development of young bodies.

Courtney said it is also hoped that through this competition parents will become more sensitized as to the importance of milk in the diet of their young children and urged all principals, teachers and parents to encourage students to participate and gain useful knowledge and receive tangible rewards for themselves and nationwide recognition.

According to Asst. Manager, Hubbard's Agency Department, Margaret Roberts, the promotion targets not only regular shoppers but also students who need milk to assist in their growth and development.

The promotion would run from October to December and the essay competition is open to all grades five and six primary school students (350 to 400 words) and forms one, two and three secondary school students (400 to 650 words) on the topic - The importance of milk to the growth of the child.

Participants are expected to submit a hand written essay to their school together with one Dutch Lady coupon.

The essays will be judged on the basis of health facts, content, grammar, clarity, paragraph sequence and legibility.

The prizes are (Primary) -  $700.00, $300.00, and $250.00 respectively in vouchers, (Secondary) - a laptop computer, $500.00, and $250.00 in vouchers respectively.

All vouchers are redeemable at Hubbard's on the Carenage, St George.

The promotion also makes provision for customers in the form of a coupon competition, which will culminate in prize draws for a Daewoo Refrigerator (first prize), a 24" cooker (second prize) and a voucher for $750.00 (third prize).

Customers who purchase any size Dutch Lady powdered milk will be awarded coupons depending on the size of the product.

For every 40 points that a customer accumulate, it earns him or her a chance to win one of the three prizes at the end of the promotion.

Boxes will be provided in all participating supermarkets to collect the coupons.

The competitions end on December 20 and presentations to all winners will be done on December 22.

The canned milk, which first entered the local market decades ago under the name "Freco" is sold to the public in the evaporated, condensed and powdered form.
