Digicel known for its commitment to give back to the community donated $50,000 dollars on Monday to the Dorothy Hopkin Centre to assist with the construction of a Gabion wall to the south east end of the property.
Over the years the Centre has been struggling with an erosion problem caused by the river at the back.
This situation with the inclement weather has forced the management into taking major steps to get the situation under control.
The entire project is estimated to cost the Centre approximately $450,000 dollars.
The Center has approached the Government of Germany as well as the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) for funding and continues to seek additional support from the local business community.
This donation is part of Digicel’s ongoing thrust to support special needs children throughout Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
On hearing the plight of the Centre, the telecommunications company was the first local business entity to pledge support towards the retaining wall fund.
“We at Digicel have heard the highest of praises for this home and we want to help keep this place for years to come. Many Corporate companies have supported the Dorothy Hopkins Centre for the mentally challenged and disabled over the years, such as Republic Bank, the Grenada Airports Authority, Blue Horizon Hotel, La Luna Hotel & Grenlec. In order to preserve these good deeds and for the home to continue its good work we found it mission critical to assist” said Patricia Maher Digicel’s Country Manager.
“Digicel is the first company to come to our assistance and the staff and residents of this noble establishment want to express our heartfelt gratitude, we hope that through the media more corporate citizens will become aware of our plight and follow in Digicel’s footstep.” said Sonia David, board representative of the Dorothy Hopkin Center.
