Prison authorities in Grenada are rather tight-lipped about a reported stabbing incident within the institution in recent days. THE NEW TODAY has been reliably informed that long-standing inmate, Stalin Bruno of Woburn, St. George’s has delivered an almost fatal stabbing wound to another inmate at the Richmond Hill prison. Known as the one-hand bandit, the highly dangerous Stalin is feared in the country especially by women since he has been convicted in the past for rape.
Stalin lost one of his hands a few years ago when it was shot off by a police bullet as the prisoner was on the run after making a successful break from the prison and was said to be targeting women.
According to an authoritative source, the injured inmate whose name was given only as “Lambert” is said to be in a critical condition at the General Hospital in St. George’s. It is believed that the blow delivered by Stalin penetrated the lungs of his fellow inmate.
Details are not immediately available as to what caused the conflict between the two prisoners. In July 2007, Stalin attacked another prison inmate with a sharpened instrument in what was believed to be a gang-related incident from within the walls of the prison.
The prison inmate in that incident suffered chops to the chest and one hand.
When contacted by this newspaper, Acting Commissioner of Prison, Don Mc Kenzie said he preferred not to comment on anything that might have happened at the prison involving the inmates in the past few days.
Mc Kenzie returned to the prison on August 1 and is expected to take charge of the institution from Wesley Beggs who is said to be on holiday.
Speculation is rife that the Ministry of National Security, headed by Prime Minister, Tillman Thomas is looking to Mc Kenzie to help improve security within the prison and to tackle the aged old problem of smuggling of drugs and illegal items like cell phones.
The source also confirmed to this newspaper that another prison inmate who has been described as dangerous, Cherman Wilson has been diagnosed with cancer of the leg and requires medical treatment.
