Police are investigating a case of alleged incest in St. Paul’s, St. George’s at the start of September. An authoritative source told THE NEW TODAY newspaper that a 37 year-old construction worker is accused of having sexual intercourse with his ten-year old niece sometime between September 1 and 2.

British National Tarrie Dowden has found herself in trouble with the law. The 27-year old Dowden who has been residing in Grenada for the past year was arrested and charged for the offense of taking prohibited items into a police station last week Thursday.

Minister of Works and Public Utilities,  Joseph Gilbert, has commended the management of the Grenada Postal Corporation (GPC) for its leadership of the state body, including the introduction of new initiatives to keep the corporation viable. Gilbert, who is the Minister responsible for the GPC, made the remarks against the background of reports that the United States Postal Service (USPS) is planning to eliminate about 220,000 full-time jobs by 2015.

The minimum wages paid to domestic workers and security guards in Grenada are being increased. The announcement was made by Labour Minister, Honorable Glynis Roberts on the heels of a report from a Wage Advisory Committee that included representatives from the Grenada Trades’ Union Council (GTUC) and the Grenada Employers’ Federation.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Karl Hood has begun a week long visit (Sept. 3rd to Sept 8th) to Israel aimed at exploring areas of common ground as well as to build the foundation for expanding bilateral Caribbean-Israel relations. The trip, inaugurated by Israeli Minister for Foreign Affairs Avigdor Liberman, is being implemented under the auspices of Project Interchange, an institute of AJC (American Jewish Committee), in collaboration with Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Labour Minister Glynis Roberts is encouraging more private and non-governmental organisations to assist needy students achieve their education goals. "It is indeed a good gesture when organisations can help those who are deserving of help in our communities,'' Hon. Roberts said at an event of the National Insurance Scheme (NIS).

Police believe they have managed to make a dent on one of the major suppliers of illegal drugs leaving the island for a foreign destination. Woburn resident, Shankiel ‘Riley’ Myland was arrested last week Friday by members of the Drug Squad and is now facing a charge of possession of illegal drugs and trafficking.

The victory of top Grenadian athlete, Kirani James as well as his two colleagues who represented Grenada at the just ended IAAF World Championships in South Korea continues to be a source of pride and inspiration for all Grenadians. The 18-year old resident of Gouyave, St John stormed to victory in the 400m at the World Athletics championships last week Tuesday to give Grenada its first international gold medal.

The pendulum continues to swing fully in favour of labour under the current Tillman Thomas-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. That claim to fame once belonged entirely to the Grenada United Labour Party (GULP) under the late, Sir Eric Gairy whom many regard highly as an outstanding social revolutionary for his successful fight for better wages for rural and blue collar workers in the 50’s and 60’s.
