Eighteen-year-old Grenada wonder boy, Kirani James stunned defending champion LaShawn Merritt of the United States to win the 400m gold Tuesday and secure Grenada's first ever medal at the World Championships in South Korea.

James, who has run just a handful of senior races after many junior titles, surged past Merritt just before the line for a personal best of 44.60. The 400m produced a classic finale as Olympic champion Merritt, recently back from a 21-month ban for doping, came round the final bend with what looked like a comfortable lead.

However James found a stirring finish leaving Merritt to settle for his second World Championship silver medal in 44.63 with Belgium's Kevin Borlee, whose twin Jonathan was fifth, claiming bronze in 44.90.

Prior to the race, Merritt indicated that he sensed that James had come to the world games to win the gold medal but that he himself had interest in it and was preparing to defend his title. Hundreds of Grenadians who were already at work converged at various business places and offices throughout the island to view the television coverage of the 400m final.

The New Today Newspaper saw several passersby streaming into the nearby RJ's Pharmacy on St. John's Street, St. George's to take in the excitement that was taking place on the TV screen.

The highly talented James gave himself a perfect birthday gift (he turns 19 on September 1) by taking the gold and giving himself a big name in the future as a teenager. A few weeks ago, the sensational Grenadian quarter miler won his first professional race in 44.61 seconds in London, England. The other Grenadian in the race, Rondell Bartholomew placed sixth with 45.45 seconds.

Soon after qualifying for the 400m final James confirmed that he is now a professional athlete but will continue to take classes at the University of Alabama. He told reporters the decision was taken following discussions involving his family, coach and sponsor.

Two years ago, James broke Usain Bolt's six-year old CARIFA Games 400m record and he was named Grenada's sportsman of the year at the age of 17 after winning the 2010 world junior title.

World championships men's 400m final results from Daegu, South Korea on Tuesday. 1. Kirani James (Grenada) 44.60secs 2. LaShawn Merritt (U.S.) 44.63 3. Kevin Borlee (Belgium) 44.90 4.
