Retired Commissioner of Police, James Clarkson has challenged members of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) to be united as a team in service to their country. Clarkson who was delivering his final address as Commissioner of Police last week Friday commanded all police officers to collectively summon the common bond and faith in an organisation that has the public confidence and trust. He urged them to continue to stamp out corruption, drugs and obscenities.
"Continue being confidential if you want to continue to earn that trust," Commissioner Clarkson told persons assembled at the SSU Camp at Point Salines to witness the passing of the baton to New Commissioner, Willan Thompson. He noted that the criminals the police force have to deal with are not the traditional ones of yesteryear who were engaged mainly in housebreaking and looting, but the new brand of criminals seem to get satisfaction with total destruction.
"These challenges will require us to shift priorities from traditional crime fighting methods to a new kind of tactical intelligence-led policing which can win that war," he said. The outgoing Clarkson disclosed that in the past few weeks the local police have successfully managed to deal with the recent spike in criminal activities on the island. He said that the lawmen have managed to recover a large quantity of drugs worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
He dropped hints that with such large sums of money involved and lost to those behind the illegal drug trade, this would not be allowed to just simply disappear from the drug trade without consequences. Clarkson advised parents to admonish their children to get out of drugs and crime and other illegal activities.
The outgoing Commissioner of Police also commented on the current situation that is taking place in neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago in which a limited State of Emergency was declared by government in order to deal with a serious crime situation. According to Clarkson, many Grenadians have relatives residing in the Twin Island republic and advised that close attention should be given to the situation by the authorities in St. George's.
He believes that there can be an influx of relatives returning to Grenada in order to get out of the problem in Trinidad and Tobago. The "hot spots" in Trinidad and Tobago where most of the crimes are being committed are in places such as Laventille and Morvant where a number of Grenadian nationals reside.
