Playing Cricket, In-door Games, as well as Cooking and Farming have been listed as the main hobbies of Grenada’s New Commissioner of Police, Willan Thompson. A former student of Presentation Brother’s College, Thompson will assume the post of Commissioner of Police from September 1 for one year in the first instance.
The baton has been passed on to Willan Thompson, making him the 23rd Commissioner of Police in the existence of the 158th year of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF), and the 16th Commissioner since the People’s Revolutionary Government of 1979.

Details are beginning to emerge about a physical confrontation between a senior Grenada government minister and an executive member of his own constituency branch. An authoritative source told THE NEW TODAY newspaper that Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karl Hood and newly appointed Deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ralph Lord were engaged in a physical battle following a recent meeting of the Executive of the St. George South-east branch of the party.
Grenadians can expect new Commissioner of Police, Willan Thompson to adopt some tough measures as he leads the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) into a new era. In his maiden address at a change of command ceremony last week Friday at the Special Services Unit Compound in Point Salines, Commissioner Thompson made known his immediate priorities which include making sure that the force move forward as an institution that is responsible for law and order.
One of Grenada’s top hoteliers, Sir Royston Hopkin has encouraged a group of students to take their education seriously. Sir Royston who is the Chairman and Managing Director of the world renown Spice Island Beach Resort in the south of the island said these students now have an opportunity to attend a secondary school. His comments came during the presentation ceremony for awardees of the Sir Royston Hopkin Scholarship Fund which is now in its 20th year. That scholarship would assist children right through their tertiary education.

Retired Commissioner of Police, James Clarkson has challenged members of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) to be united as a team in service to their country. Clarkson who was delivering his final address as Commissioner of Police last week Friday commanded all police officers to collectively summon the common bond and faith in an organisation that has the public confidence and trust. He urged them to continue to stamp out corruption, drugs and obscenities.

The State-owned National Insurance Scheme (NIS) has continued to invest heavily in the development of the nation’s children. For the past year, just over $100,00.00 was spent, bringing to date $1.2 million the total amount pumped into the scholarship programme to benefit local children. Seven new students, one from each Parish including Carriacou, have been added to the programme that is now into its 16th year.
Credit Unions in the sub-region have been encouraged to take advantage of a regional capitalization fund. President of the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Union (CCCU), Yvonne Harris said the regional body is mindful of the negative impact that the demise of British American Insurance Company (BAICO) and Clico International has had on the OECS credit union sector.
