The Grenada Electricity Services Limited (Grenlec) is forging ahead with plans to get involved in renewable energy technology.

Speaking at a function last week Wednesday at the company’s Corporate Office at Dusty Highway, Chief Engineer Clive Hosten said while Grenlec urges its customers to manage their energy usage and conserve electricity, it has also made significant progress in preparing for renewable energy technology for the country.

Hosten disclosed that the lone power company already has over 50 odd customers connected onto its inter-connection network, with about three hundred kilowatts of small-scale renewable generation.

He also said the wind energy initiative projects both in Grenada and Carriacou, and geothermal energy on the mainland are some of the work Grenlec is doing, involving renewable energy.

The Chief Engineer said although the company has had to depend on fuel imports for many years, renewable energy and particularly, geothermal energy can “transform us into an energy-sufficient nation” which will no longer be at the mercy of world fuel prices that is uncontrollable by the country.

“We have to import fuel, and we see fuel prices going up and up, and our aim is really to try to stabilise fuel prices,” he said.

“It will also allow us to reap the benefits of utilising more environmentally-friendly technology,” he added.

Grenlec’s Chief Engineer felt that these issues are important to their customers and promised that as the company makes progress with its plans, they will continue to engage customers on those issues.

He said in the current tough economic times, Grenlec understands the financial challenges its customers are facing and that they are committed through their business initiatives to continue making a difference.
