Public consultation on a proposed National Cultural Policy (NCP) for Grenada has started on the island.

According to Minister with responsibility for Culture, Senator Arley Gill, one of the objectives of the policy is to provide a legislative framework to protect, promote and preserve the rights, privileges and actions governing culture.

Sen. Gill said it is hoped that the policy will lead to the creation of avenues for employment for Grenadians with cultural talent.

“The policy will give guidance on how we can further establish and strengthen our cultural industry,’’ he explained.

“It will allow artists to employ themselves or provide some sort of avenue for financial opportunities”, he said.

Grenada has secured US$42,000 in funding to complete the NCP, which is intended to cover all aspects of national culture, from the local cuisine to the impact of tourism and technology on the local cultural industry.

In addition, the issue of media houses promoting local cultural content is one that must be addressed with the formulation of the NCP, said Sen. Gill.

He is encouraging Grenadians to attend the consultation in their parish to present their ideas so as to influence the drafting of the NCP.

Public discussions on the cultural policy will be held October 8 at the Westerhall Secondary School and at the St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic School in St. David on October 11.

The series of consultations will be brought to every parish throughout October, November and December, and ending in Carriacou and Petite Martinique in January 2012.

Once completed, the National Cultural Policy will be brought before Cabinet and then tabled in the Houses of Parliament.
