A school from the sister island of Carriacou has won the Rotaract Smart Saver Annual Spelling Bee Competition.

Ten-year old Roshaun Lendore, a student of L’Esterre Rosary School, came out on top in the final of the competition held last Saturday at the auditorium of the Grenada Boys Secondary School in Tanteen, St. George’s.

For his efforts, Lendore was rewarded with a trophy and $2,500.00.

Teacher of the L’Esterre Rosary School, Renee Lewis who prepared Lendore for the competition, told The New Today Newspaper that they went through an intense word training regime.

However, Lewis credited the young man’s parents who spent a lot of time assisting him with the preparation.

She said that Lendore was selected as their choice after a small competition among a small group of Grade 5 students from the school.

According to the schoolteacher, her student is very studious and she had full confidence in him winning the competition.

Lewis expects Lendore to do well in his future exploits.

An excited Lendore told this newspaper it was unbelievable to have travelled to Grenada and emerged as the winner.

He said although he went through the intense practice with his teacher after school as part of the preparation, nonetheless he felt a bit nervous during the competition.

The 2011 Spelling Bee Winner has his eyes set on becoming a Pediatrician in the future.

The Spelling Bee competition that was sponsored by the Grenada Union of Teachers Credit Union and Gittens, through its Haliborange product was keenly contested among the 12 schools that made it to the final.

After 20 rounds in the competition, the organisers had to proceed with a tie-break between Hermitage Government School and St. Patrick’s Anglican School to determine the second and third-placed winners.

However, the Hermitage Government School student, Sorana Charles failed to correctly spell the first word, “picturesque” that came to her, which allowed St. Patrick’s Anglican School student, Heidi Stanisclaus to take the second place.

Stanisclaus was rewarded with a cheque for $1,500.00, while the third-placed winner received $1,000.00.

All of the participants including the top three were presented with monetary prizes.
