Prominent St George’s pharmacist, Rupert John was able to beat off an attack on his business premises on St. John’s Street in St. George’s by a masked man who attempted to stage a daring robbery.
The lone gunman entered RJ’s Pharmacy at approximately 6:45 p.m. last week Friday night and demanded cash. The assailant who concealed his identity with a Rasta hat and dreadlocks pulled over his forehead and below his eyes covered with a green scarf, entered the pharmacy and quickly put a gun to the head of the female cashier on duty.
He demanded her to pass the money but the shocked worker screamed out and this alerted Mr. John who was further inside the building in his office. The female employee managed to inform the armed gunman that there was no money in her drawer and invited him to look inside the till himself.
Having heard the commotion at the front desk, Mr. John, the Owner/Manager of the Pharmacy, left his office to see what was happening. He said that on his way to the counter he was met by the assailant who put a gun to his head and said, “”Mr. John, pass the money”.
The gunman told the business owner that he is not working, and needed the money so pass it over. Despite the tense atmosphere inside RJ’s Pharmacy, the owner indicated to the intruder that he had already made his daily deposit and did not have any money on hand.
The businessman then dipped into his pocket and pulled out a bunch of keys to show the man that he did not have any money.
According to Mr. John, he also informed the individual that he had money in his vehicle that was parked outside the pharmacy and that he could come with him to go and get it.
Apparently sensing danger in going outside, the masked man decided to make a hasty retreat and ran out of the pharmacy and headed upwards.
The NEW TODAY understands that a few police officers were within the vicinity of the pharmacy building but were not aware of the attempted armed robbery.
Mr. John said that this is the first time in 10 years of doing business that he had to face up to such an incident. Police have been called in to investigate the attack on the pharmacy.
