Two former Calypso Monarchs are among a group of nine calypsonians who will be challenging defending monarch Biko for the 2011 Calypso Monarch Title. Elwin Mc Quilkin known in the calypso arena as Black Wizard, and Raymond “Beast’ Matthew received the judges’ approval to compete in the calypso final on Dimanche Gras Night, Sunday August 7.

Murder accused in search of Counsel

 Murder accused Lyndon Sylvester has advised Chief Magistrate Tamara Gill that he intends to secure the services of a lawyer to represent him in court for the murder of Mt. Gay resident, Elmita Richards. The body of the 53-year old Richards was discovered last week  inside of her house by her son in a pool of blood.

Tisagh Chase found guilty of murder

 Young entrepreneur, Tisagh Chase has been found guilty of the murder of 25-year old Kevin Hillaire of Mardigras, St. Paul’s by a 12-member jury sitting at High Court Number One. The murder took place some time between June 12 and 13, 2008 at an apartment in Mont Tout, St. George’s that was occupied by his lover, Trisha Haywood.

Protected areas project comes to an end

After six years of challenges and success, the OECS Protected Areas and Associated Livelihoods Project (OPAAL) has finally come to an end following a three-part ceremony held at the Interpretation Centre at Grand Etang.The OPAAL Project comprised of a Sustainable Livelihood Sub Project which provided avenues for residents within the project areas and from nearby communities to be educated and trained in areas that they can create employment.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Raymond Charles is tipped to act as Commissioner of Police when James Clarkson demits office at the end of the month. According to a well-placed source, Charles is the front runner to hold  down the post pending the selection of a new Commissioner of Police by the Public Service Commission (PSC) headed by Gloria Payne-Banfield.

PWU to raise Fullerton issue

The Public Workers Union (PWU) will most likely raise the issue of the status of newly elected Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kenrick Fullerton as a civil servant under the rules of the Public Service Commission (PSC).  Fullerton took over as NDC Chairman at the party’s annual convention on July 14 when he defeated the incumbent, Minister of State for Housing, Senator Glen Noel.

Play Spice Mas with Digicel

“Instinct” is the name under which Digicel masqueraders will parade during the 2011 Monday Night Mas.  The telecommunications network on Tuesday launched it Spice Mas package at its Point Salines Headquarters.  Country Manager, Patricia Maher said that Digicel loves Carnival and has been supporting the event long before the company’s launched its operations in Grenada in 2003.

Catholic Church losses though BAICO

The Roman Catholic Church in Grenada has confirmed that it was among those that suffered financial losses due to its investment in British American Insurance Company (BAICO) and Clico International. Word of this has come from the Church’s Director of Communications, Fr. Sean Doggett at a recent press conference held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in St. George’s.

ASP McIntyre: Loitering will not be tolerated

The Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) plans to stamp down on loitering in the city especially near to business places. The warning has come from Head of the Community Relations Department (CRD), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sylvan McIntyre during a meeting with the local media.

Commissioner Clarkson: Crime has decreased

comissioner-clarksonPolice Commissioner James Clarkson has sought to set the record straight on the level of crime in the country. Commissioner Clarkson who was at the time speaking at a presentation ceremony of some bicycles that were provided by the Roman Catholic Church last week Wednesday said people are saying that crime is on the rise in Grenada but they are dead wrong.


According to the island’s chief cop, the records will show that within the last month, crime has decreased on the island by 17 percent. “Particular crimes have risen, that’s the crime of robbery, and some people (are) getting it wrong. There is a difference between robbery and stealing,” he said.

New regulations governing buses on the horizon

The Traffic Department has announced plans to take steps to prevent some buses from travelling along certain streets in the Town of St. George. Speaking to reporters at a press conference in St. George’s on Tuesday, Head of the Traffic Department, Superintendent Jessmon Prince said  the Royal Grenada Police Force is in the process of ensuring that regulations are put in place to ensure that the buses comply with the bus route regulations.
