Another shooting near to the prison

Less than 72 hours after the shooting to death of a civilian around the Richmond Hill prison, another guard on duty at the tower was forced to fire at a potential intruder.

 

Informed sources told THE NEW TODAY newspaper that the guard fired several rounds at someone who was spotted close to 10.00 p.m last Monday night in the thick bushes behind the prison.

The recent rise in criminal activities in the country especially the kidnapping for ransom of a youngster at Fort Jeudy has been engaging the attention of many law-abiding citizens in the country. Although the incident seems to be rather strange, it is the first known case of kidnapping in Grenada and the perpetrator demanding a ransom payment to free the victim.

Fatal Road Accident on Highway

A midday accident on the Maurice Bishop Highway on Tuesday has left a middle-aged woman dead. Fifty-nine year old Shirley Maloney from Belmont, St. George's was knocked down while in the process of crossing the northbound lane by a dark blue Honda Civic car, registration number PG 947.

Fire in the Drill Yard

The Drill Yard, which once housed the Ministry of Works on Young Street, St. George’s, has experienced its first major fire since it was built in the 17th century. The fire which begun just before mid-day gutted the old Road Office, the medical office of bone specialist, Dr. Kester Dragon, and a car owned by insurance salesman, Gordon Humphrey.

Grenada’s Opposition Leader, Dr. Keith Mitchell might have injured his back while exercising on a treadmill machine at his home in Happy Hill, St. George’s. A source close to the New National Party (NNP) told THE NEW TODAY newspaper that the party leader was ordered to take some bed-rest last month by his doctor after complaining of discomfort in his back.

Media association seeks decriminalising defamation

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad — THE ASSOCIATION of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM) and the International Press Institute will be launching simultaneously a campaign to decriminalise defamation in the Caribbean and Europe in August. 

ACM president Wesley Gibbings and IPI Executive Director Alison Bethel McKenzie made the announcement at the Hyatt Regency, Port-of-Spain when they signed a strategic partnership agreement.

Nurses at the Male Surgical Ward of the General Hospital in St. George’s are grappling with an outbreak of chicken pox. A confidential source at the island’s main hospital told The New Today Newspaper that the existing medical condition has had an effect on their operations on the ward.
