A teacher at a secondary school on the island is under investigation for allegedly pulling a knife at a 15-year old student at the Happy Hill Secondary School.
A reliable source told THE NEW TODAY newspaper that the Ministry of Education and the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) are currently probing a report of an altercation between the male teacher and the female student at the Food and Nutrition Laboratory of the school.
The source who did not wish to be named said the two people were first engaged in a slight pushing of each other before things got out of hand. He said the student attempted to enter the laboratory to visit her sister who is a teacher in the building. He spoke of the male teacher who was in the building pushing the 15-year old away and closing the door in her face.
“ I understand that the other teacher told the man that the girl who was coming into the laboratory also was her sister. The man (male teacher) then went to open the door to allow the girl in. When the door was opened, the girl (female student) pushed back the teacher”, he said. According to the source, the teacher eventually managed to overpower the female student and at one point he held a knife to her throat while trying to place her head in some water.
“The next thing that happened is that the teacher moved in on her and grabbed her in the neck and the two of them held on in a kind of fight. The teacher grabbed a knife (from inside the lab) and was moving towards the student. He had to be over-powered by people in the lab. This newspaper understands that after the incident, the teacher left the school compound allegedly without the permission of the principal.
The source chided the Principal of the school, Daniel Thomas for not making mention of the incident at the school’s assembly on Monday morning. “The teacher just drove off after the incident, he came to school again on Monday but went off again, and the principal did not even say anything to us about it (the incident),” the source said.
When contacted by THE NEW TODAY, Principal Thomas confirmed that he was at the school last week Friday but does not have any information pertaining to the alleged incident. “I don’t know anything about that. I don’t know what you’re speaking about,” he said when our reporter asked him about the altercation between the teacher and the female student.
He said he cannot say if indeed there was an altercation between one of his teachers and the Form Four Student, and referred the newspaper to the Ministry of Education. Checks made with the ministry confirmed that a report was received by the District Education Officer, Asher Frank.
THE NEW TODAY also understands that the sister of the 15-yyear old student had briefed the Principal on the incident on the school compound.
