Fugitive from justice, Crofton Hannibal has been found in South Africa, according to Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Nelson.

Speaking to reporters at his office on Monday, Nelson said that his office has already begun filing papers for Hannibal’s extradition to Grenada to face trial for attempted murder. He did not give details about the arrest. Local law enforcement officials had sought the assistance of Interpol to locate the fugitive.

Hannibal, a draftsman, is accused of firing three bullets into the body of Grenadian-born Michael Antoine who resides in Canada with his licensed firearm during an argument over an architectural drawing in January, 2008.

It is alleged that Antoine who was dissatisfied with the work done by Hannibal was demanding a repayment of his funds for the job done. The incident took place on Church Street, St. George’s close to the law office of Hannibal’s wife, an attorney-at-law by profession.

An investigation into the incident by police led to the arrest of the Draughtsman on a charge of attempted murder. He was placed on bail in the sum of $15,000.00 with two sureties. At the end of a Preliminary Inquiry into the matter, Hannibal was indicted to stand trial in the May 2010 Criminal Assizes.

After his failure to show up for trial on May 11, 2010, the court learnt from Immigration Officer, Sergeant Elyam Purcell that Hannibal left the State on February 23, 2010 for San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Immigration Officer said further checks made by his department showed that the fugitive failed to return to the island.

High Court Judge, Francis Cumberbatch immediately revoked the bail and issued a warrant for Hannibal’s arrest.

The two people who stood bail for the accused man, his brother Michael Hannibal and John Fletcher were required by high court judge, Justice Lyle St. Paul to pay the court $7, 500.00 each for their failure to secure Hannibal’s presence at the court.

News of Hannibal’s possible whereabouts in South Africa was first made known when the bailers came to court in October last year. Fletcher told the court that was being presided over by Justice St. Paul that he believes Hannibal had sought refuge in Botswana, South Africa.

If brought back to Grenada, Hannibal would most likely be sent to the Richmond Hill prison to await his trial.
