Country Manager, Patricia Maher announced the introduction of an Anthony “Jericho” Greenidge Award during the launch of the sixth Annual Media Workers Association of Grenada (MWAG) Awards ceremony last week Wednesday at the Kalinago Beach Resort.

Maher described “Jericho” as a friend and an ambassador to Digicel, from the time the company began its operations in Grenada in 2003.

She said the award would be presented to a young journalist on the night of the event carded for January 22 at the Trade Centre Annex.

The lucky candidate will receive the company’s latest state-of-the-art handset valued at $2,000.00 in addition to $1000.00 cash.

The local Digicel boss spoke of “Jericho’s” passion for gadgets as she announced that her company is proud to sponsor the Award on an annual basis, as part of the Annual Media Awards Ceremony.

The journalist to be awarded will be chosen by MWAG.

The late “Jericho” or “D Duke” as he was affectionately known died in the United States on November 3 at the age of 50.

At the time of his death “The Duke” was the first Vice President of MWAG and was employed with WEE FM radio station.

President of MWAG, Rawle Titus welcomed the Digicel initiative and the company’s contributions to the media fraternity over the years.

This is the third consecutive year, Digicel is partnering with MWAG for the staging of the media awards.

President of the local media body, Rawle Titus disclosed that they have tweaked the presentation this year and that MWAG has issued a revised list of categories on the advice of the adjudicators attached to the University of the West Indies Jamaica.

According to Titus, the list of categories has been reduced from 31 to 16.

“We have had to take this decision in the interest of quality. We have had a situation where the judges were complaining that some persons were just sending entries with little regard for quality”, said Titus.

“So Dr. Canute James head of CARIMAC, the premier journalism school in the region, was suggesting that reducing the number of categories was a way to tackle quality control. So we have taken on board this decision but we have broadened some categories so as to encourage participation,” he said.

The Association of Caribbean Media Workers and Canute James of the University of the West Indies, Jamaica will facilitate the judging of the respective entries.

The categories up for grabs for 2011 includes Best Produced News Story, Best Feature Story (Radio/Television), Best Parliament Story, Best Religious Story, Best Business Story, Best Political News story, Best Economic Story, Best Produce Industrial Story and Best News Story on Tourism.

Local journalists can also receive awards for Best Agriculture Story,  Best Public Health Story, Best Sports Story, Best Produced 10-minute Sportscast, Best Produced Newscast, Best Investigative Story, Best Public Service Announcement, Best Produced Local Commercial, Best Human Interest Story, Best Entertainment Story  and Best Documentary and Current Affairs Programme.
