Former Attorney General, Elvin Nimrod, has hinted that government is making moves to find a new position for the controversial Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kenrick Fullerton.

Addressing hundreds of party supporters at a recent public meeting in St Patrick, Nimrod charged that the National Sports Council Bill, 2011, that was passed in the Lower House last month will be used to accommodate the Congress member.

“...This Sports Council that was formed, they passed the legislation... to accommodate the Chairman of the NDC, and look out and see who will be appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of that Council” he said.

Fullerton, a former member of Parliament for St Andrew South-east, was kicked out of the 2008 general election race by Political Leader, Tillman Thomas, following a domestic altercation between the then MP and his wife.

A former policeman, Fullerton has been mounting a major political comeback into frontline politics in the St Andrew North-East constituency held by Opposition member, Roland Bhola.

Fullerton was elected Chairman of the ruling Congress party during its annual convention in July at the Hermitage Government School in St. Patrick’s East, the constituency of Prime Minister Thomas.

The Grenadian leader had opposed Fullerton’s candidacy on the grounds that he was seeking to contest a political position while being employed as a public officer.

Fullerton ignored the advice of his leader and went on to defeat the incumbent holder of the post, Senator Glen Noel.

According to Nimrod, the new job allegedly being prepared for the NDC Chairman is the party’s leadership way of compromising on the matter, which enables Fullerton to keep both his party and government positions.

Nimrod said while the NNP has no problem with the establishment of a Sports Council, it has issues with the purpose with which it was established calling it a “disaster”

The National Sports Council Bill, 2011 was first read in Parliament on October 20.

The act seeks to establish a National Sports Council, which will be responsible for the simulation and facilitation of the development of sports generally in Grenada including the maintenance and managing of all sporting facilities provided by the Government of Grenada for public use, except the Grenada National Stadium.

The Bill provides for the appointment of a CEO with the approval of the Minister of Sports who will be responsible for the day to day functioning of the Council, the supervision of the staff of the council and the implementation of all sporting policies.

The Bill that was presented by Sports Minister Patrick Simmons was passed in the house after a few amendments. Were made to the document.
