A new business has opened its doors in the far south of the island offering for the first time Halal meat. Known as Ali’s Meat and Fresh Vegetable Market and Convenient Store, the business, which is located along the Maurice Bishop Highway, was officially opened during a brief ceremony held last week Friday.

In speaking at the ceremony, Islamic Cleric, Imam Patel, congratulated the couple on their latest business initiative, stating that they had made a bold move during a slow economic period to bring out the first service of its kind in Grenada.

Patel said that the variety store offers an opportunity for vegetable farmers throughout the country to sell their produce to the establishment to earn much needed cash.

The new business has already created immediate employment for 13 persons.

A friend of the owners, Salim Rahaman gave an insight into the preparation of Halal meat for consumption in accordance with Islamic Rites.

He said that Halal meat in its original and intended sense means the meat of an animal that has been ethically treated, properly fed and raised and in the end mercifully slaughtered.

Rahaman pointed out that animals to be slaughtered are taken away from others, blessed, quickly killed and allowed to drain.

He said the intention is to secure the rights of the animal to a good life as well as ensure that the meat they offer up is pure.

Cows, goats, sheep and chicken will be purchased from local authentic farmers to be butchered onsite at the store.

Large animals that cannot be slaughtered at the outlet will be taken to the St George’s abattoir and then transported back to the store.

Meat will be offered seasoned, unseasoned or rotisserie style. No pork or alcohol will be sold on the compound.

This is the third business initiative undertaken by business owners, Salina and Shazard Muhammad.

The first was Ali’s $10 store followed by Ali’s Foam and Furniture.

According to the wife, the latest venture cost them in excess of $300,000.00.

She said that the establishment of the meat and vegetable market was a dream of her husband who has been involved in poultry farming from the age of 10.

The lady said that the new business is targeting students attending St. George’s University as well as a number of Grenadians and visitors in need of Halal meat.

The businesswoman stated that the convenient store offers a wide variety of quality products at excellent prices, “giving value for money”.

Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture, Michael D. Lett who is the Parliamentary Representative for St. David’s, as well as Glynis Roberts, MP for St. George South, Minister of Tourism and Parliamentary Representative for the Town of St George, Peter David and Minister of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, George Prime attended the opening of the business.

The Meat and Fresh Vegetable Market and Convenient Store will be open from 7.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. Monday to Sunday.

There will be a delivery service for customers within two miles of the establishment.
