Officials of the state-owned National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA) are disputing claims that they have been unjustly disconnecting persons who are on the government-assisted water programme.

General Manager of the island’s sole water supply company, Christopher Husbands told reporters last week that the government-assisted water programme is managed by the Ministry of Social Development, and the Authority will execute instructions that are given to them by that entity.

veronica-visions5Husbands said NAWASA does not make decisions as regards who are put on or taken off the programme.

NAWASA’s Finance Manager, David Francis also added to what was disclosed by Husbands, by saying that at the time some people were making noise about some persons being cut from the programme, the ministry itself was undertaking a review of those household who were assigned to receive  assistance.

“That review has been done and it’s now operating fairly OK,” Francis said.

Close to 400 persons are known to be receiving government assistance through the programme.

Francis indicated that the programme could be subjected to abuse since other people take advantage of the assistance being provided to the less fortunate.

He said there is a maximum of 900 gallons of water per household on a monthly basis and anyone using above that will have to pay from their own pockets.
