St. George’s, September 20, 2011 – Residents of Hillside Avenue in Frequente, St. George’s, have good reason to celebrate as their new concrete road nears completion.

“Hillside Avenue has been in a terrible state of disrepair for many years,’’ said MP for the area, the Hon. Glynis Roberts. “I am extremely happy that after several decades of neglect we are now able to address the situation and bring much-needed relief to the residents of the area.’’

Works Minister, the Hon Joseph Gilbert, recently toured the site as part of his regular programme of planned visits to projects being undertaken by his Ministry.

Minister Gilbert, who himself is an engineer by training, expressed satisfaction with what so far has been achieved at Hillside Avenue. He complimented the contractor and his team “for a job well done.’’

Since the start of the year, the Ministry of Works has undertaken more than 100 similar projects under its Small Concrete Works Programme. Several of them are ongoing at the moment.

“What we are doing is bringing development to the doorstep of our people,’’ Minister Gilbert said. “We are bringing jobs to our people right where they live – right in their communities.’’

Government has budgeted EC$5 million for this year’s Small Concrete Works Programme. The Works Minister said that he intends “to struggle to have the $5 million allocation increased three-fold to $15 million’’ for the next fiscal year.

“This is required in order for the Ministry of Works to at least meet the minimum public demand for concrete-related improvement work in the country,’’ Minister Gilbert explained.
