Spice Stakeholders to attend Study Tour in India, through the Grenada Nutmeg Sector Development Strategy Project

St. George’s, Monday 5th September, 2011: Six Grenadians will spend a week in India studying the operations of the nutmeg sector there. The study tour has been organized by the International Trade Centre, (ITC) as part of its support for the Grenada Nutmeg Sector Development Strategy.

The delegation’s schedule in Cochin, India includes visits to; selected nutmeg plantations established with high yielding plants and improved drying facilities, specific grafting facilities that would be applicable to Grenada;

Units making value added products like nutmeg and mace oil and oleoresin;

Organic spices factory which exports nutmeg and mace to Europe and USA;

Quality testing laboratory to hold discussions on quality assurance in nutmeg and mace.

Participants will also hold discussions on machinery and equipment used for processing spices and get to opportunity to establish contacts with suppliers.

The Grenada Nutmeg Sector Development Strategy was established to develop a comprehensive strategy for the revitalization of the nutmeg sector in Grenada.

The design and implementation of the strategy was stakeholder led. Committees appointed by nutmeg sector stakeholders were made up of value chain representatives from the private and public sector

The ITC has been supporting the Government of Grenada in the development of the strategy and will meet all costs related to the study tour.
