South Korea’s Ambassador to Grenada, Yong-Kyu Kwon is due to end his tour of duties to the Caribbean region next month after serving for five years. A luncheon was hosted in the Ambassador’s honour by the Honorary Counsel for the Republic of Korea in Grenada, Jerry Seales at Belmont Estate at Hermitage, St. Patrick’s last week Wednesday.
During the ceremony, it was pointed out that Ambassador Kwon who resides in Trinidad had taken several important initiatives aimed at strengthening the relations between Korea and Grenada. Seales said that as Honorary Counsel for Seoul in Grenada, it is his pleasure to thank Ambassador Kwon and the Government and people of Korea for what has been done in strengthening the relations between the two countries.
“As the Honorary Counsel for the Republic of Korea in Grenada, I can stand testimony over the last five years to say that relations have gotten closer,” he added. According to Seales one of the positive steps was taken in 1990 when South Korea lifted visa requirements on Grenadians visiting the Asian country.
Ambassador Kwon who addressed the media said he is happy over the current state of relations that exist between Korea and Grenada. He also rejoiced over the support St. George’s gave to the Asian Country in hosting the World Trade Fair last May.
“Both countries, Grenada and Korea, geographically they are far away but we have a common goal. While I am working as the Ambassador to Grenada, I am seeing the potential for cooperation in the future,” he said. Ambassador Kwon disclosed that the embassy has made a strong recommendation to the Ministry in Seoul to help in implementing the Korean model of teaching at the St. George’s University and for local teachers to travel to Korea to teach English at their schools.
This was Ambassador Kwon’s first diplomatic posting in the Caribbean, after having served as Minister-Counselor at the Korean Embassy in Indonesia and South Africa.
