After having completed his law degree in 2008, Head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Inspector Senneth Joseph has decided to pursue a Master’s Degree in Law from the University of London. Joseph said the institution agreed to accept him to do a Legal Professional Course but his interest was in the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) that was previously known as the Bar Vocational Course (BVC).
However, he said the university encouraged him to do a Masters, which would ensure that he does not have to jostle with other persons with LLBS (Bachelor of Laws) to actually get into the school to do the BPTC.
According to the FIU boss, application for the English Bar has now become very competitive resulting in excess of three to five thousand applicants from across the Commonwealth for a mere two hundred places in a given school seeking to do the BPTC.
Joseph said that a law student with a Master’s degree will get automatic admittance to do the BPTC with the Bar Standard Boards. He spoke of having confidence in himself to achieve the Master’s degree and to proceed to further his education and qualification with God’s grace.
Joseph spoke about the seriousness of the two-year programme that commences in May 2012 in that should he fail once or twice, he would automatically be put out of the programme. “It is not a programme to mess with,” he remarked. The FIU Boss sees the level of investment he is putting into the programme as one of sacrifice.
He said that despite whatever salary he receives, he has to manage and make certain sacrifices as he believes it would, in the end, be beneficial to him. “Most of this work and investment that I have been putting into study over the years, I give it back within the department where I work.
“It is not to say that I am getting a stipend... or rewarded in any way for this, but I think if you could do something to help yourself and in the process you’re giving it back into the country, that is very, very good (and) at least you can give back to the State something that they have given to you.
Inspector Joseph intends to concentrate on Financial Crime for his Master’s degree, as it is an area in which he has a lot of expertise. He said on completion of the programme his goal is to be accepted to the local Bar.
Earlier this year, Woman Corporal of Police, Vah Hercules was awarded a Bachelor of Laws degree with Honours from the University of Huddersfield in England.
