23-year old vendor from Lagoon Road, St. George’s is nursing gun shot wounds after police confronted him as he attempted to steal from the Otway Gas station.

Sheldon Ron Streete is currently under police guard at the Male Surgical Ward of the St. George’s General Hospital after being shot in the upper right leg by a police officer attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in St. George’s early Saturday morning.

A reliable source told The New Today Newspaper that a party of police officers were called out in response to information received about a break-in which was in progress just after 5:00 a.m. at the Gas Station on Lagoon Road, St. George’s.

The source who spoke on condition that he was not named said that on arrival on the scene, the police party allegedly observed Streete who was dressed in dark clothing, coming out from the bottom section of the Gas Station with something dark in his hand.

This newspaper ws told that the suspect jumped the wall after one of the police officers approached him. The police officers reportedly gave chase and called out to the suspect to stop. The source said although the wanted man was subdued by one of the police officers, Streete allegedly struck the officer with the object that he was carrying in his hand.

A struggle ensued and in the process the police officer is said to have discharged two shots at the man’s leg. The shooting took place in the vicinity of the nearby Grenada Co-operative Nutmeg Association’s (GCNA) compound on Lagoon Road.

The NEW TODAY was also told that the injured Streete lashed out at the policeman once again, hitting him another blow with the same object, managed to free himself, and continued to run away.

Streete was later found lying on the ground behind the GCNA building. According to the source, a search was conducted and a number of items including one pair of slippers, one three-cell maglite, one pair of gloves with the name Ron written on them, one bunch of keys, and one pair of jeans pants were found.

With the assistance of an associate of the gas station, Michael Otway, police decided to survey the business premises and discovered that one of the rear doors situated on the southern side of the office was broken.

Up to the time of going to press, no charges have been laid on the injured Streete.
