Police have arrested and charged David Hamilton, a 40-year old labourer from Belmont, St. George’s in connection with the carnival weekend incident in which several vehicles were broken into in the city and a number of items stolen.
A police official told THE NEW TODAY newspaper that Hamilton, a regular law-breaker, is facing two counts of stealing from a motor vehicle, and three counts of damage to property. In addition, the accused has also been charged with housebreaking and stealing, and stealing.
A number of vehicle owners were forced to count their losses as a result of damages done to their vehicles over the carnival period. The vehicles targeted were those parked on Lucas Street, Lowther’s Lane and Church Street, and two in the Grand Anse area.
THE NEW TODAY was told that the vehicles were vandalised and several items stored were removed while the owners were enjoying the carnival celebrations. It is estimated that about 12 vehicles were damaged and the incidents reportedly occurred between August 8 and 9. A police source told this newspaper that the windows of several vehicles were smashed in order to gain entry to steal the items.
“It is not like they picked the lock. In one of the vehicles, the window was smashed,” the source said. The items taken away included amplifiers, cellular phones and money. The source who poke on condition that he was not identified said the vehicle owners are not only concerned about the loss items, but the costs they have to incur to repair the damages to their vehicles.
According to the source, one of the vehicles owners who resides at Belmont, St. George’s has already estimated the cost of repair to his vehicle to be in the region of $1,400.00. Some of the items have allegedly been recovered by the police after members of the Criminal Investigation Department in St. George’s detained a suspect who was apprehended while carrying a bag with items.
