Police have arrested and charged David Hamilton, a 40-year old labourer from Belmont, St. George’s in connection with the carnival weekend incident in which several vehicles were broken into in the city and a number of items stolen.

With the carnival festival out of the way, it is now back to the business of running the affairs of the country for the Tillman Thomas-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. Topping the agenda for consideration is the same old bogey - getting the economy up and running on a stronger footing especially with greater job-creation from a number of projects that have been in the pipeline for the past three years.

Youth trained for Farm Machinery operation

The Ministry of Youth Empowerment and the Chinese Agricultural Mission are partnering with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in promoting the involvement of youth in the agri-sector. Ten young men under the Grenada Youth Apprenticeship Project are being trained to operate small farm machinery.

Second fire in two days

Police are investigating a second fire to hit a rural community within the space of two days. A family of six in Madeys, St. Patrick, was left homeless after their house was burnt flat by fire late Sunday evening, August 14.

Future of Fr. Mallaghan’s Home under review

The future of The Fr. Mallaghan Home For Boys at Victoria, St. Mark’s is now being considered. Spokesperson for the Diocese of St. George’s-in-Grenada, Fr. Sean Doggett has dismissed reports circulating in certain quarters of the local media that the home is being closed. In an exclusive interview with The New Today, Fr Sean said a radical reassessment and re-evaluation of the institution is being undertaken by the Diocese in conjunction with the Board of Governors.

Westmorland did well at CXC

The Westmorland Private School has every reason to be proud of its academic performance for the 2010 to 2011 school year. The school, which has a pre-primary, primary and secondary department, topped the CXC (CSEC) exams that were written between the months of May and June.

School affected by fire

Parents and teachers of the St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic School in Laura Land, St. David, are soon expected to meet to further assess the loss and damage from a weekend fire at the school.

The fire, which occurred at about 2 p.m. Saturday, destroyed a junior section of the school comprising four Grade 6 classrooms and the kindergarten department.

Stanisclaus and John Charged with $29, 000.00 Robbery

Another charge has been laid on two Mt. Parnassus, St. George’s men for the recent robbery of C-Tech Gas Station along the Maurice Bishop Highway.

Poultry farmer, Alister Stanisclaus and his employee, Andy John who are currently on remand at the Richmond Hill Prison for the offences of possession of a nine-millimeter firearm, and possession of six rounds of nine-millimeter ammunition now have an additional charge of robbery slapped on them.

Woman Charged with Harbouring Fugitive

Nadia Johnson, a cook from Cherry Hill, St. George’s appeared before the Carriacou Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on a charge of harbouring an escaped prisoner and was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison at Richmond Hill, St. George’s.
