Veteran Broadcaster, Llewlyn 'Lew' Smith has been recognised by the local Steelband Association for his contribution towards Grenada's culture, and the steel band movement. The award was handed to Smith during the 2011 National Panorama Championship last week Saturday at the Grenada National Stadium by Chief Executive Officer of the Grenada Cultural Foundation, Livingston Nelson.
During the short ceremony, Nelson said the award is as a result of the contribution Smith makes in enlightening, educating and entertaining the Grenadian population on pan and calypso music in Grenada. Smith who appreciated the generosity extended to him pointed out that he is one who subscribes to the saying that one must give service with honour, and not for honour. However, he added that if there are people who feel that he should be honoured for what he did then he accepts it with humility.
The GBN Klassic Radio Man gave the assurance that he will continue to play his part in promoting the local culture unlike his other fellow broadcasters. He spoke of nobody else, but himself being "the grandmaster of pan on the radio." This is the second award that has been conferred on Smith who hosts the morning show on GBN Radio, AM 540 that he refers to as "Klassic, Lew And You."
During the independence celebration on February 7, Smith was awarded for promoting the one-month celebration of the country's 37th independence anniversary.
