The highly expectant crowd at the 2011 soca monarch competition went into a frenzy when the Master of Ceremony announced the name, “Lava Man” to make his appearance in Position No.2 in the contest. As the MC announced it was time for Marcus “Lava Man” James to enter onto the big stage, the thousands that attended the show waited and waited but after three calls, there was no “Lava”.
Several sections of the crowd started to boo, others started pelting paper cups onto the stage and others were chanting, “Lava, Lava” in support of the controversial soca artiste from the Carenage and his popular piece for the season, “So We Dey”. The announcement came later in the show from MC, Vibes International that the artiste had met in an accident and wished him well.
However, the following day a statement was posted on his face book page, pointing to “sabotage” as a reason for the no show of Lava Man. The statement reads as follows: “I apologise for the disappointment to my fans, I was at the gate early but due to sabotage I was unable to make it to perform.
“After meeting in 2 accidents back to back I’m really sorry that I disappointed my fans but there was nothing I can do but leave it in the hands of the most high. Again I’m sorry I really wanted to be there to please my fans.” But hours later, Lava Man issued a press release through Home Based Production, which distanced himself from the posted message on his face book account.
In this particular bulletin, Lava Man explained that a series of unfortunate incidents and a total breakdown in communication with his management team were primarily responsible for his non-appearance at the soca monarch finals.
“It is with greatest humility that I offer profound apologies for my failure to appear in the finals of the GCC LIME Soca Monarch last evening and the National Stadium. A series of unfortunate incidents and a total breakdown in communication with my management team resulted in me not being at the venue in time to enable my performance.
“I wish to assure everyone that this was not intentional and I take full responsibility. To the organisers and sponsors of the event, I express my deepest apologies. To the patrons at the finals I deeply regret the disappointment caused as a result of my actions. To my fellow artists in competition, no disrespect was intended.
“To my fans, supporters and well-wishers in Grenada and around the world, I am truly sorry. This has been one of the most disappointing moments in my career, I truly feel the pain. I beg your understanding and continued support.
“I also wish to disassociate myself with the comments posted earlier on my face book page. In life, we all face our dark moments and I am sure I will learn from this experience as I continue to develop my career.
"As I dust myself off from this horrific experience, I seek the strength from the highest force, and give the assurance to all that the best is still to come. I must also congratulate Terror Kid for his outstanding performance in capturing the 2011 Soca Monarch.
“I wish the nation a peaceful and enjoyable carnival, and let’s take it to the road because So We Dey, I sincerely thank you”.
This latest release made no mention of Lava Man being involved in any accident as announced by the MC.
However when THE NEW TODAY contacted Home Base Entertainment, it’s leader Wayne Green, who is known to be closely affiliated with “Lava Man”, confirmed that the artiste was involved in an accident but that “it was nothing serious”. Lava Man was one of 16 soca artistes down to face the judges in the 2011 GCC LIME Soca Monarch Competition. His absence gave the standby, Devon Flanders an opportunity to participate in the competition.
However, Devon who sang, “Take a jump with a Jab” failed to impress and could not make it high on the score sheets of the judges.
