After many years of not being able to capture the National Queen Show Title, St. George’s has done it in 2011, but the judges’ decision was not a popular one with a large number of patrons. Cheri Jones who works as a chef at University Club with St. George’s University (SGU) won the judges’ hearts to walk away with the coveted title on what was referred to as “Majestic Thursday” at the Grenada National Stadium.
Seven contestants, each representing a Parish in Grenada, took part in the show that was blended with dances and songs. The panel of seven judges headed by Germaine Dennie as Chief Judge had the unenviable task of judging the seven beauties in the categories of talent, swimwear, costume and evening wear and interview. Apart from winning the Carnival Queen Title, Jones won the prize for having the best talent, and best costume.
With the use of a guitar, she sang “Redemption Song” that was done by the late Jamaican Superstar, Bob Marley. The Parish of St. Andrew’s, represented by Rholanda Courtney secured the first runner-up position. The 21-year old Courtney also received the prize of Miss Photogenic. Miss St. David’s, Shereen Parris who was the crowd favourite had to settle for second runner-up.
The 24-year old from New Westerhall, St. David’s also walked away with the title of Best Swimwear and also received the prize for the Best Evening Wear. Miss Congeniality went to Lindsy Hazel, the 18-year old contestant from Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Miss St. Mark’s, Stephiann St. John, a 24-year old had the best interview. Moments after being crowned, the Carnival Queen told reporters that preparation for the show was very difficult for her.
Jones said unlike the belief that mere beauty brings out the Carnival Queen, there are a number of factors that have to be considered. She spoke of having to undertake four months of training from the time she won the Miss St. George’s Title in May right up to the national queen contest. Jones said she went to bed every night thinking that she had to work very hard to capture the 2011 Carnival Queen Title.
Although, having been involved in modeling, she admits that she has not taken part in major pageants before. The 2011 Carnival Queen plans on focusing her attention on working with younger people in the hospitality industry. She recognised that it is a technical aspect that needs to be improved upon for the overall benefit of the tourism industry.
“I think other than all the other technical skills in Grenada that we’re focusing on, we’re not pushing that trade as much as we can,” she said.
