Dethroned Calypso Monarch, Biko Lewis believes the emergence of Pamela Courtney as the 2011 National Calypso Monarch can serve as an impetus for young women to now come forward and participate in calypso competitions. In an exclusive interview with The New Today Newspaper, Biko said it is nice to see that the local calypso artform was able to produce a woman who for the first time in competition was able to win the coveted title.
Pam as she is being referred to, is the third woman to have won the National Calypso Monarch Title. She scored 781 points with her two selections, “Agents of change,” and “Vagrancy.” Biko indicated that he is happy that Pam came out victorious as she is a member of the Kaiso Bards calypso tent with which he is associated. He said he believes this would now encourage all of the other young women to come forward and take part in the national calypso competition.

The entire English-speaking Caribbean for the most part can be described as union-infested - a factor, which discourages genuine investment and further opportunities for our people through much, needed economic stimulation. The militancy of these unions whose leaders love to flex their muscles locally as if to establish themselves as demi-gods and power houses at the time gets broadcast live and direct to the entire world as a result of modern technology.

The Grenada Government has extended congratulations to quarter-milers Kirani James and Rondell Bartholomew on their recent performances at the Samsung Diamond League athletic meeting in London. James, who was competing in his first professional race, ran a world leading time of 44.61 seconds to win the men’s 400m at the Aviva London Grand Prix in Crystal Palace last weekend.
The 18-year-old 400m sensation produced one of the most outstanding performances in the London Diamond League meeting. James blitzed a quality field to produce the fastest time in the world this year - in what was his first ever professional race. His extraordinary display - allied to this week’s news that former world and Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner will miss the Worlds in Daegu with injury - will install him as both gold medal contender and new star of his sport.
