Defending Calypso Monarch, Biko Lewis has warned those trying to dethrone him that he is one hundred percent ready and prepared to defend his title at the National Calypso Monarch Competition on Sunday night.
Biko told THE NEW TODAY Newspaper he will be firing all cylinders in trying to hold onto the crown which he won last year for the second time. “I’ll be going out there and do my best, and by my best I think ... will be able to recapture the title,” he said. The defending king will be the first artiste to perform on the night of the competition at the national sporting stadium.
Biko does not see the position as putting him at a disadvantage in the battle against the nine other artistes. He stated that the standard he intends to set from the word go will be like a high jump and will make it difficult for those who are behind to meet and surpass.
“There is an advantage in singing first. You go out there and you set the standard very high and if anybody behind can jump higher than that then let them,” he said. Biko also pointed out that last year he sang in the second position and was able to win the crown for a second time. He said his fans can expect nothing less than what they are accustomed to receiving from him on the night of such a competition.
The defending Monarch will be presenting, “Different Voices” which is a social and political commentary, and “ND See.” Biko indicated that he has been getting good reviews for the song, “ND See” which he has been performing throughout the season. However, he said there are some people who miss the essence of the song which relates to his friend who had a 20/20 vision and has now lost it.
The calypsonian who is from Chantimelle, St. Patrick’s, is a schoolteacher by profession.
UPDATE: Biko was unsuccessful in defending his crown, which was won by PAM COURTNEY
